I. For Day 1, please read the following sections from "The Reformation," in Western Civilization, ed. Dennis Sherman, answer the following questions and TURN in as homework: 

READ:

1.    The introduction to the Reformation, pp. 19-20.

2.    Johann Tetzel, The Spark for the Reformation: Indulgences, p. 20.

3.    Martin Luther, "Justification by Faith," p. 21.

4.    Martin Luther, "On the Bondage of the Will," p. 21.

 
QUESTIONS:

1. Who was Johann Tetzel (Look him up)?

2. What were indulgences?

3. What did Johann Tetzel think was wrong with the sale of indulgences?

4. Who was Martin Luther (Look him up too!)?

5. What did Luther mean by "justification by faith"?

6. How did Luther's argument about the Will follow from his ideas about justification by faith?

7. Why might this doctrine appeal to some Catholics, but threaten the Catholic Church?
